Depression in Primary Care program

Helping patients who are depressed

Helping patients who are depressed

There’s still a stigma attached to depression. Many people may not feel comfortable seeking treatment. Because people are often most comfortable talking to their primary care physician, this may be the one person they turn to for help.

Because of the crucial role that primary care physicians play in diagnosing and treating depression, we created the Aetna Depression in Primary Care Program.

This program offers primary care physicians:

  • A time-saving tool (the PHQ9) to help screen patients for depression and monitor progress during treatment
  • Reimbursement for the time and effort involved in these extra steps
