Mail Service Pharmacy FAQs

The length of time to get your first prescription filled will depend on how long it takes to receive your prescriptions from your doctor. For fastest service, ask your doctor to e-prescribe to CVS Caremark Mail Service Pharmacy (NPI: 1881952851).

Once the mail-order pharmacy receives your prescription, it usually takes up to 10 days for you to get your medicines.

You can find all of the information you need on the label on your current medicine container. You’ll need to provide:

  • The name of the medicine(s) you would like to order
  • The dosage
  • The name of your prescribing doctor

The mail service pharmacy will handle the rest.*

If your doctor e-prescribes, your prescription goes electronically to the pharmacy right away. If you mail in an enrollment form or call, a pharmacy employee will contact your prescribing doctor(s). This will be to request a new prescription for 90-day supplies of your medicine(s). You’ll receive notice from the mail-order service pharmacy if your doctor’s office does not respond within a few days.

We suggest that you call your doctor to ask for a new prescription. Usually an electronic prescription is fast and easy for the doctor’s office. The mail-order service pharmacy cannot send your medicines without a prescription.

Some medicines are not eligible for mail-order delivery.

  • Your formulary, the list of drugs covered by your plan, shows medicines eligible for mail-order delivery.
  • The Start Mail Service feature on Caremark.com will not allow you to order prescriptions that are not eligible for mail-order service.
  • Member Services can review your medicines with you. They can advise which are eligible for mail-order delivery.

The mail-order service pharmacy must get your approval before mailing any medicine you didn’t order yourself. This includes prescriptions submitted by your doctor. If we need your approval, you will receive a call, text message or email. How we contact you depends on your saved communication preference. You can also give your consent to ship using the CVS Caremark mobile app.

It’s easy to opt out of mail-order delivery. Simply call Member Services or the number on your mail service packing slip. Before you do, check with alternative providers for your medicines, such as your local network retail pharmacy. This can ensure that there will not be a gap in your treatment.
