Fertility care more within reach for everyone

Everyone builds families in different ways. For many, understanding whether you need fertility help is a first step.

Aetna® is proud to be the first national insurer to cover intrauterine insemination (IUI) as a medical benefit on eligible plans.

Expanding access to IUI eases family planning

IUI is a type of artificial insemination to get sperm closer to an egg. It helps to see if there are fertility issues that might make pregnancy more difficult. It can be an important first step in a family-building journey.

Our industry-leading policy change expands coverage of IUI, without an infertility diagnosis and regardless of a member’s sexual orientation or partner status. We cover IUI without precertification or the need for extra fertility benefits.

Before this update, most health plans had to purchase extra fertility benefits to include IUI. And IUI was covered only when infertility was diagnosed. This was usually after having sex that results in sperm-egg contact for a set period of time without getting pregnant.

How members can access fertility benefits

As an Aetna member, IUI coverage becomes available on a rolling basis for qualifying plans starting September 1, 2024. Members can call the Member Services number on their ID card to learn about fertility benefits, including IUI. Or log in to their Aetna member website.

Coverage of other infertility services — such as medication, surgery, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and donor sperm or eggs — hasn’t changed. It’s based on plan benefits.

Our IUI policy upholds our pledge to innovation and clinical quality. Aetna is dedicated to women’s health. We’ve made it a priority for many years through our women’s health and reproductive and sexual health programs and policies.

We strive to improve access and equitable care for all members. Our industry-leading IUI coverage makes fertility care more within reach for everyone.
